Station Projects

Investments in passenger rail service throughout the Commonwealth rely on partnerships with our local communities and other stakeholders. These include station improvement projects that enhance the experience for Amtrak Virginia and VRE passengers.  

Completed Projects

Fredericksburg Station

Fredericksburg Station

In May 2024, VPRA and VRE jointly unveiled extensive renovations to the Fredericksburg Station as one of the first completed projects of the Transforming Rail in Virginia initiative. The $14.1 million Fredericksburg Station Improvement Project included rehabilitating all platforms and rail bridges, building a new stairway for parking lot access, increasing ADA accessibility, and adding signage, sidewalks, and fresh paint. These upgrades also restored the historical character of the more than century old station. The project aimed to increase ridership and ease traffic congestion along the I-95 corridor, and in fiscal year 2024, 106,204 Amtrak passengers passed through the newly upgraded station.  The station is served by Amtrak Virginia, the Commonwealth’s state-supported passenger rail service, Amtrak’s long- distance service, and VRE.

Newport News Transportation Center

The Newport News Transportation Center opened in August 2024 with an improved experience for passengers traveling on Amtrak Virginia and the city’s regional bus system. The project included the construction of a new station and platform along with a new maintenance facility for crews to service and clean trains before departure. This modern facility comes as passenger rail service experiences record ridership numbers with Newport News serving 97,597 Amtrak Virginia passengers during fiscal year 2024. Partners on the Newport News Transportation Center project included Amtrak, the city of Newport News, VPRA, CSX, Federal Railroad Administration, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The station is served by two Amtrak Virginia roundtrips daily between Newport News and Richmond, Alexandria, Washington D.C., and cities in the Northeast. It also serves as a transfer point for Amtrak’s Thruway Bus Service, extending travel to Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and for Hampton Roads Transit, taxi service, and shuttles to and from the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport.

Quantico Station

Quantico Station

Quantico Station recently underwent a series of improvements aimed at improving safety, service, and rail capacity. The $27.5 million Quantico Station Improvement Project, a VPRA and VRE joint project completed in Fall 2024, included construction of a pedestrian bridge and center platform and extension of an existing platform. With this construction, the station now has three boardable platforms. The station house also received fresh paint and upgrades to its furnishings and display screens. These improvements are part of a larger VPRA project, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Commonwealth of Virginia, that adds 9.2 miles of a third mainline track between Arkendale and North Possum Point. The $101.4 million Arkendale project is a part of VPRA’s Transforming Rail in Virginia initiative to expand passenger rail service in the Commonwealth.  The Quantico Station is served by Amtrak Virginia, the Commonwealth’s state-supported passenger rail service, Amtrak’s long- distance service, and VRE.  During fiscal year 2024, 21,054 passengers passed through the station.
