The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) manages all administrative and fiduciary responsibilities for the Commonwealth’s state-supported Amtrak Virginia passenger rail service, including the current eight daily roundtrips originating in Roanoke, Norfolk, Newport News, and Richmond. VPRA also provides funding to Virginia Railway Express (VRE). Learn more about our programs.

Vision

VPRA is creating vital connections between the Commonwealth and America’s national rail network. Through strategic partnerships, investments, and capital improvements, we will increase Amtrak and VRE service over the next decade. VPRA administers all capital expansion projects, infrastructure, and land acquisitions related to this initiative.

Overview

We’re Transforming Rail

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) is responsible for promoting, sustaining, and expanding the availability of passenger and commuter rail service in the Commonwealth. Created in 2020, VPRA administers all capital expansion projects, infrastructure, and land acquisitions related to the Transforming Rail in Virginia Initiative, which will increase Amtrak state-supported service and increase Virginia Railway Express (VRE) service in Virginia over the next decade.
