The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) manages all administrative and fiduciary responsibilities for Virginia’s state-supported passenger rail services, including the current eight daily roundtrip Amtrak Northeast Regional services originating in Roanoke, Norfolk, Newport News, and Richmond. Our signature program, Transforming Rail in Virginia creates a vital connection between the Commonwealth and America’s national rail network. Through strategic partnerships, investments, and capital improvements, we will double Amtrak and increase VRE service over the next decade. VPRA administers all capital expansion projects, infrastructure, and land acquisitions related to this $3.7 billion initiative.

We’re Transforming Rail
The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) is responsible for promoting, sustaining, and expanding the availability of passenger and commuter rail service in the Commonwealth. Created in 2020, VPRA administers all capital expansion projects, infrastructure, and land acquisitions related to the Transforming Rail in Virginia Program, which will double Amtrak state-supported service and increase Virginia Railway Express (VRE) service in Virginia over the next decade.
