NOTICE FOR MARINERS

ISSUED MAY 27, 2025

General/Bridges/Construction
From: 2025-05-12 To: 2025-09-12
Location: 38.87462° N / 77.0386° W
Bridge Name: Long Bridge

Marine work is scheduled to begin in June 2025 as part of the design and geotechnical evaluation phase of the Long Bridge Project. Crews will be performing soil borings to assess riverbed and subsurface conditions. Work will take place between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Mariners can expect to encounter multiple work barges in the vicinity of the project area over the coming months. While these barges will typically be moored outside the main navigation channel, some operations may require equipment and vessels to operate near or within the channel during daylight hours.

  • Obey all posted signs and marine warning devices.
  • Maintain a safe distance from construction equipment, moored barges, and support vessels.
  • Do not enter restricted areas marked by buoys, signage, or safety barriers.
  • Use extreme caution when navigating near the work zone, especially during daylight hours when active operations are ongoing.
  • Reduce speed to minimize wake in the vicinity of construction activities.

Long Bridge Rail Partners will be conducting preliminary engineering services as part of the scope validation for the proposed Railroad Bridge and Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge construction. Work will include pile driving and drilling for geotechnical borings. The work will be performed within the Potomac River between the Virginia Shoreline to the Washington DC Shoreline between the existing WMATA Metro-Yellow Line Bridge to a point approx. 200 LF southeast of the existing CSX Long Bridge. Mariners are advised to use extreme caution when transiting the area and can contact project tugboats on VHF 13 for questions. https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Featured-Content/Mariners/Local-Notice-to-Mariners-LNMs/District-5/
