Project Description
L’Enfant Fourth Track and Station Improvements includes the construction of approximately 1 mile of additional mainline track through and around VRE’s busiest station and improvements to the existing station platform. This project is led by VRE. The L’Enfant station platform improvements include updating the access to the existing side platform and creating an island platform while also extending it to accommodate longer trains. The current platform accommodates only one, six-car train at a time, limiting operations and causing reduced service reliability. The transformation from a side platform to an island platform will enable the simultaneous boarding and alighting of two trains and the extension of the platform will allow the station to accommodate eight-car trains. The project involves the planning, design, permitting, and construction of the additional mainline track and station platform improvements. This project will reduce passenger travel time, improve service reliability, and reduce congestion. More information about this project can be found on the L’Enfant Fourth Track and Station Improvements project page on the VRE website.
This project will improve service reliability as well as station access and customer convenience by doubling the number of platforms serving passenger trains.
