Accessibility

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority attempts to reach all citizens, regardless of age, income or disability.

We constantly evaluate document sizes, load times, and other factors that would prevent computer users without high-speed Internet access from viewing our site.

Additionally, we encourage citizens to contact us with any challenges they might have in that regard, so we may make changes or accommodations, accordingly.

VPRA makes every effort to ensure site accessibility in compliance with W3C specifications. Specifically, the VPRA website has been designed to ensure handicap accessibility by:

  • Providing equivalent alternatives to auditory and visual content using ALT tags with explanatory information.
  • Providing proper meta tag usage in compliance with the specification so that personalized information can be grouped together and located on this page. By providing appropriate meta tags, we ensure that the site is easily searchable. Also, title tags appear at the top of the page to ensure ease of use and readability.

Screen reader software available

Anyone who is visually impaired can download the free NVDA screen reader for Windows. Mac users can enable their built-in screen reader, VoiceOver.

In accordance with the requirements of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability in its services, programs, or activities.

Employment: VPRA does not discriminate on the basis of disability in its hiring or employment practices and complies with all regulations promulgated by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under Title I of the ADA.

Effective Communication: VPRA will generally, upon request, provide appropriate aids and services leading to effective communication for qualified persons with disabilities so they can participate equally in VPRA’s programs, services, and activities, including qualified sign language interpreters, documents in Braille, and other ways of making information and communications accessible to people who have speech, hearing or vision impairments.

Modifications to Policies and Procedures: VPRA will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all of its programs, services, and activities.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a VPRA program, service, or activity, should contact Gerica Goodman at (804) 382-4886 or [email protected] as soon as possible but no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event.

The ADA does not require VPRA to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.

Complaints that a VPRA program, service, or activity is not accessible to persons with disabilities should be directed to Gerica Goodman at (804) 382-4886 or [email protected].

VPRA will not place a surcharge on a particular individual with a disability or any group of individuals with disabilities to cover the cost of providing auxiliary aids/services or reasonable modifications of policy.
