King and Commonwealth
Railroad Bridges
The replacement of the King and Commonwealth railroad bridges will extend the bridge life duration and reduce maintenance needs.
VPRA, in collaboration with CSXT, will design and construct replacement rail bridges over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue in Alexandria. Replacing the rail bridges will reduce maintenance and minimize rail service interruptions while modernizing the bridges to current bridge standards. It will also improve safety for pedestrians and motorists under the bridges. This project is within the limits of the Alexandria Fourth Track project.
In Spring 2022, VPRA began a Feasibility Study (the “Study”) to determine the future of the rail bridges (the “Bridges”) over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue in the City of Alexandria. The study considered the future of the bridges in terms of short-, medium-, and long-term design options. The study was conducted to determine the existing conditions, project purpose, and needs and to screen the impacts of the design options created for the Bridges.
