Market Square/Street
The heart of downtown Roanoke is just two short blocks from the Amtrak station, and features over a dozen restaurants with cuisine ranging from pizza and Lebanese, to farm fresh burgers and Thai, to craft breweries. Shop for gifts and clothing at independent boutiques, as well as fresh produce and artisan wares at the Historic Roanoke City Farmers’ Market, the oldest continuously operating open-air market in VA. Downtown Roanoke is also home to Center in the Square, an arts and cultural nonprofit that houses multiple museums as well as the Mill Mountain Theater, a rooftop garden, and a large coral reef aquarium.
Downtown Roanoke’s West End
Start your exploration of Roanoke’s West End by checking out the Virginia Transportation Museum. You’ll find two restaurants to choose from on the same block, as well as two breweries, the Big Lick Brewing Company and the Golden Cactus Brewing Co., both featuring stunning, larger-than-life murals.

The Roanoke Valley Greenways system features over 30 miles of paved and natural surface trails for all kinds of visitors and all kinds of recreation. This popular spot for biking and walking winds through various communities in Virginia’s Blue Ridge, including downtown Roanoke. Take the Greenways from downtown Roanoke to explore nearby neighborhoods of Grandin Village and Wasena, as well as the Roanoke River, voted the number one spot for urban kayaking in North America by USA Today in 2022.
