Project Description

Franconia-Springfield Bypass, located just south of Franconia-Springfield station, is a rail bridge that will allow passenger trains to crossover to serve stations on the west side of the rail corridor and will reduce congestion for freight and passenger trains on the remaining two rail tracks. Project construction includes a single track on the Bypass Bridge with accommodations for a future second track. The construction of the project will allow all trains to more safely move through the rail corridor, increase the capacity for passenger service, and improve the reliability of both passenger and freight service. The Franconia-Springfield Bypass project will be carefully coordinated with the Franconia to Lorton Third Track project.

The Franconia-Springfield Bypass will expand passenger rail capacity and reduce conflicts between passenger trains and freight trains just south of Franconia-Springfield station.
